What eBook formats are compatible with my Kindle?

One question I often get on our Facebook page is about what format of eBooks to download on other sites to work with the Kindle. Often sites that sell eBooks or offer free eBook downloads will make them available in a multitude of formats.  You just have to choose which format you want to download the selected title in when choosing download file.  Mobipocket (.mobi) is one of the most commonly found Kindle ready file types.

Currently the Kindle supports the following formats:

.mobi

.prc

.azw

.txt

and most recently .pdf files.

If you have an eBook in another format, such as .epub or .lit, you can use a eBook conversion software such as the one offered by Calibre here.  It is able to convert most eBook files to the different compatible formats.  It is one of my personal favorites and doubles as an organization tool on your computer to keep all your eBooks.
